Peridot is a well known and ancient gemstone, with jewellery pieces dating all the way back to the Pharaohs in Egypt. The gem variety of the mineral Olivine, it makes a lovely light green to olive green gemstone. The most desirable colour of peridot is deep olive green with a slight yellowish tint. Deeper olive green tones tend to be more valuable than lighter colours.
Agate is the banded form of the mineral Chalcedony, which is a microcrysalline variety of quartz. Although the pattern on every agate is unique, the locality of an agate will provide resemblances in banding style or colour. There are many variety names of agate.
Amazonite is a translucent to opaque feldspar gemstone with a pretty green colour. Amazonite is named after the Amazon river of South Africa. There are no amazonite deposits that exist in the amazon region, so presumably this stone is named to its resemblance in colour to the green of the tropical rainforest.
Coral (Greek - meaning unknown) have built reefs and atolls with their branching trunks. Only their calcified skeletons are used in jewellery. The most valued type of coral is the noble red coral. Unworked coral is dull, when polished it has a vitreous luster.
Fluorite is a very popular mineral, and it naturally occurs in all colours of the spectrum. It is one of the most varied coloured minerals in the mineral kingdom, and the colours may be very intense and almost electric. Pure fluorite is colourless, the colour variations are caused by various impurities. Some colours are deeply coloured, and especially pretty in large well formed crystals, which fluorite often forms.
Malachite is a very popular mineral with its intense green colour and beautiful banded masses. Dense banded specimens are often sliced and polished to bring out their beautiful colouring. Polished, banded malachite has been carved into ornaments and worn as jewellery for thousands of years, and in some ancient civilizations it was thought to be a protection from evil if worn as jewellery.
Tanzanite is the blue to violet gemstone vatiety of the mineral Zoisite. Since its relatively recent discovery in 1967, it has become a mainstream and popular gemstone, and is used extensively in jewellery. Todate, tanzanite is found only in the Arusha region of the African country of Tanzania and it was named after its country of origin.
Thulite is the pink to reddish variety of the mineral Zoisite. It is an opaque stone composed of dense crystals, and is used as a minor gemstone.
Moonstone is the most well known gemstone of the feldspar group. Named for its glowing colour sheen that resembles the moonlight. Moonstone displays a unique play of colour known as adularescence. This effect is in the form of a moving floating light or sheen.
